Third, jojoba oil moisturizes the skin through a unique dual action: on the one hand, it mixes with sebum and forms a thin, non-greasy, semi-occlusive layer on the other hand, it absorbs into the skin through pores and hair follicles then diffuses into the intercellular spaces of the outer layer of the skin to make it soft and supple. has this not fully proven theory that thanks to this, jojoba might be able to "trick" the skin into thinking it has already produced enough sebum, so it might have "skin balancing" properties for oily skin. Second, jojoba oil is the most similar to human sebum (both being wax esters), and the two are completely miscible. If you have some pure jojoba oil at home, you should be fine using it for years. (Many plant oils tend to go off pretty quickly). Even if you heat it to 370 C (698 F) for 96 hours, it does not budge. So being a wax ester results in a couple of unique properties: First, jojoba oil is extremely stable. 25-30% of human sebum is also wax esters to give us people environmental protection. Wax esters are on the outer surface of several plant leaves to give them environmental protection. Chemically, a wax ester is a fatty acid + a fatty alcohol, one long molecule. Mother Nature also created wax esters but for a totally different purpose. Mother Nature created triglycerides to be easily hydrolyzed (be broken down to a glycerin + 3 fatty acid molecules) and oxidized (the fatty acid is broken down into small parts) - this happens basically when we eat fats or oils and our body generates energy from it. The fatty acids attached to the glycerin vary and thus we have many kinds of oils, but they are all triglycerides. MAC Cleanse Off Oil retails at $26 for 5 fl oz and also comes in a 1 fl oz travel size for $10.So what the heck is a wax ester and why is that important anyway? Well, to understand what a wax ester is, you first have to know that oils are chemically triglycerides: one glycerin + three fatty acids attached to it. Oh and a big bonus, it also works great to clean hard to remove makeup out of your brushes (liquid foundation I’m talking about you!) Also contains vitamin E to protect the skin. It is mineral oil free which is awesome since mineral oil clogs pores, and it contains olive fruit, evening primrose and jojoba seed. I’ve been using this cleanser to remove my makeup for almost two years and I have not experienced any break outs from it. Easy right? Fair warning, don’t get it into your eyes though as it will sting a little and blur your vision briefly. I find that the Cleanse Off Oil washes clean without any traces of residue, but I still follow it with my regular cleanser which is usually a foaming one using my Clarisonic Mia to ensure that my face is squeaky clean. Then you splash some water on your face and massage some more, the water will make the oil emulsify into a lotion-type liquid…Īfter that you rinse thoroughly and follow with your usual cleanser if necessary. I pay extra attention to the eye area where my makeup is usually heaviest. You massage the cleanse off oil all over your face to dissolve the makeup. How it works is very simple, no rocket science here. For light makeup one pump is enough, I use two for heavy makeup. It comes in an easy to dispense bottle with a locking pump camp. MAC Cleanse Off Oil is an oil based makeup remover that’s gentle on the skin. I can’t believe I didn’t rave about it sooner, I’m only on like my 5th bottle of the stuff. Even removes my stubborn and hard to remove Inglot AMC Gel Eyeliner. This makeup remover takes it all off without a trace, down to waterproof makeup.
